The Security Unit of the University have emerged tops for the 2016/17 edition of the UNIZIK STAFF SPORTS GAMES grand finale held at the convocation ground on Wednesday. Security Unit got a total of 59 medals comprising of 25 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze beating the Vice Chancellor’s office who came second with a total of 21 medals, consisting of 13 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze while the Faculty of Education came third on the overall medals table with 6 goal, 5 silver and 1 bronze totalling 12 medals.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ahaneku while presenting the trophies and the prize monies said that it is his dream and prayer that before the end of his tenure he will create recreation facilities where students and staff will at their leisure time enhance their total wellness through recreational activities.
Prof. Ahaneku said he has approved the proposal for 2 to 3 football pitches, basketball courts, Badminton and other sporting facilities. He also promised that there will be proper appropriation for sports and recreation for the 2018 budget where every unit, faculty and directorate participating will set aside a point inclusive of entertainment.
Prof. Ahaneku thanked all that participated for showing commitment, he further stated that the Staff Games has given the entire University opportunity to relax for certain hours and move away from mundane activities.
Other highlights of the Grand Finale were the Match Past session were the Vice Chancellor’s office emerged tops with a total of 86 points beating off rivalry from the Faculty of Education who emerged second and Health Sciences and Technology with 83 and 81 points respectively.
